Interested persons are welcome to check out a class. The best practice is to watch a class so the prospective student knows what to expect.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Where is Ground Zero Fighting Systems LLC located?
We are locate at 160 Fayette Street in beautiful downtown Morgantown, WV. Ground Zero is part of the West Virginia Martial Arts Association.
What should I wear to class?
You should wear boardshorts (or some other type of short with a draw string), an old t-shirt, and some type of spandex or compression shorts under your shorts. In addition, it is wise to wear a mouthpiece and a cup. If you have a gi, you may bring that as well.
Any hygeine issues or concerns?
You should come to class with clean workout clothes to change into. One should always train in clean clothing and should wash their gym clothes after each practice. Not to be rude, but nobody wants to train with the stinky guy. In addition to clean clothes, one should keep their finger and toe nails short so as not to scratch their training partners. If you think you might have ringworm or some other yucky condition, please do not train until it is gone.
How much is the first class?
The first class is free.
Who much does it cost to train at the WVMAA?
The cost is $50 per month with no contracts. The price may increase in the future.
Do I have to "roll" right away?
No. If you do not feel comfortable "rolling" or sparring you are not required to do so. Anyone participating in a class should feel free to withdraw from any drill or activity they do not feel comfortable with.
Any protocol I should observe?
Yes.
The Machados coined the phrase, "leave your ego at the door" and it is a wise mantra to follow. GZ's goal is to make all of our students better at jiu-jitsu. All students are expected to exercise due care and good judgement when training with others. Hotheads and folks who are reckless with their training partners will be asked to leave. The plan is to make everyone better. I can assure you that Dana White will not pop out from behind a corner to reward you with a U.F.C. contract for being a spaz or juicing someone's arm.
In addition, students are expected to avoid foul language while training. We sometimes have children in the gym so please be respectful.
Are private lessons available?
Yes.
For an hourly rate, a student can take private lessons from one of our instructors.
Do I need a gi?
Yes, eventually you will need one. Before you spend tons of money on one ask around at the gym. I am sure we can get you one at a discounted rate.
What about competitions?
Students may compete, but are not required to. We have some folks who compete all the time and some who never do. Competition is an individual decision and is only one of many factors when considering promotions.
Are all ages welcome?
Yes. Anyone in decent shape can do jiu-jitsu. As long as it is ok with your doctor, you can train. We have students well into their forties who are great at the sport.
Training for females?
Yes. Females are welcome. We understand that most if not all guys training jiu-jitsu are creepy. If a female student has a preference about who she trains or spars with, please let the instructor know and we will accomodate your wishes.
Any rules about rolling?
Yes. Please ask about the local gym rules before you roll and the instructor will go over them with you. If you are unsure as to whether or not you can do a certain technique, don't do it. No slamming/guard pounding is tolerated. If you do this you will be asked to leave.
What day should I show up for my first class?
New students are encouraged to contact us by phone or email. We prefer to have new folks show up on Tuesday nights.
